The step in Corpus Christi will remain in our memories. In this city of 300,000 people known for its military base (Naval Air Station), we decided to find a family related to the army. At the local supermarket, the HEB, we met a Vietnam veteran, clearly still moved by his "year in hell", but he did not call us back as agreed. Then we had an appointment with a U.S. Marine - yoga enthusiast -, but he canceled our meeting. It was 21:30.

We were at DragonFly, a restaurant run by a French. David was eating alone, between two discussions with the boss, his friend, and we invited him to join us. After having assured him that we would not give his name in the blog (because of his work in the oil), he agreed to open his door and his heart.

David is 32 years old. Texan born in Houston, he has lived in Corpus Christi for eight years. His job as an engineer in the oil has opened him the doors to a very chic neighborhood where houses compete with each other with their terraces on the marina and moored boats. But in the life of David and his three-bedroom house, there is a void. Despite his big boy toys scattered on the floor (guitars, mixers, hooks and fishing rods, rifles and ammunitions, chess, GoPro camera, etc..), David feels lonely.

At 32, this young Texan admits he seeks the woman of his life. He is a part of the 47% of single American men (see figures of Census Bureau) that do not meet the 53% of women in the same situation.

This fan of blues hides a spleen and unconfessed complex.

When he was younger, David dreamed of becoming a pilot or a baseball player. An American cliche. But reality has quickly caught him. After trying to find his place as a restaurant manager, David committed himself to work in a field that pays very well: oil. Although he did not finish his degree (a complex), David who grew up in a "very poor" environment can now spend lavishly and travel. He is looking for a foreign woman as a priority. He tried American women but he never knows if they like him for his black bank card of for him.

He buys his zaatar and shanklish, Lebanese products, in the supermarket. He used to cook with his grandparents as a child. And his dream of having his own restaurant did not leave him,

But oil was the way to succeed. Earn money. Become part of the American dream. As a great engineer, he is called for each failure or major problem in oil installations to fix it as soon as possible. He speaks of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico knowingly. Even if he did not intervened, he admits: "It was 100% the fault of BP. They were in a hurry and worried about costs. Everything could have been avoided."

NO ONE CAN BUY A FAMILY

Republican raised in a very religious environment, David tries to understand the world around him. During our discussion, he assured us: "You can ask me any question." Done. Homosexuality. David does not understand this. For him, it is both against nature and forbidden by his religion. Even if he would not mind having gay friends, he does not really know any and do not try to meet gay people.

100% Texan, then American. If one day he is asked to vote for secession, he will, convinced that Texas, with its many resources, can survive alone. But within five years, the Texan sees himself living outside the United States. He has already visited Paris with his family, Russia to hunt, Japan where he bought cooking utensils.

His future wife must be both traditional and accept the role of "the man" while being independent. Impossible? David smiles. He realized recently that he will have to compromise. And perhaps abandon one of its many big boy hobbies. To finally start having his family.
